Perivoli is a family farm near the village of Melanes on Naxos, about 10 minutes from Chora (Naxos Town). Olive groves, fields of the famous Naxos potato, fruit trees, a vineyard, a vegetable garden and plenty of animals: chickens, rabbits, piglets, peacocks, sheep and a donkey.
The experience starts with a walk around the farm. You meet the animals and collect the day’s eggs, walk through the olive grove to learn how olives are grown and how olive oil is made, and pass the fields where the Naxos potato grows. You taste seasonal fruit straight from the trees and pick vegetables from the garden for the cooking.
Then everyone gathers around the fire: you cook traditional Naxos dishes over wood, such as an omelette with the fresh eggs, courgette fritters, Naxos graviera cheese in pastry with honey and sesame, tzatziki, Naxos potatoes and a main course of briam (baked vegetables) or stuffed vegetables. At the table you taste Naxos cheeses, homemade wine and spoon sweets.
The day ends with Naxos dances and, for those who want to, the traditional plate smashing.
