At the foot of Mount Belles, in the village of Makrinitsa near Serres in northern Greece, Anna Kaltsidou has kept one of the country’s oldest crafts alive since 2016: silk farming. At the KOUKOULI silk farm, a 3-hectare estate with 800 square metres of facilities, you will learn how a silkworm becomes a cocoon and how a cocoon becomes silk.
During the visit you follow the stages of raising silkworms and the life of the insect, and you see reeling, the unwinding of the thread from the cocoon. In the grounds of the estate there is a bee park, where you get to know the world of the bee up close and its role in pollination.
A hot drink made with fruit from the estate is offered during the visit. The estate also has a cafe and sweet shop and a showroom with silk accessories, jewellery and decorative pieces dyed with natural pigments.
