Therianos Family Farm is an award-winning organic family farm at the foot of Mount Vrachionas, in Kallithea, Zakynthos. The Therianos family has worked this land for generations: ancient olive groves, black currant and local vineyards, beehives and a small farmyard. Dimitris, his mother Fantoula and his siblings have opened the farm to visitors since 2014.

You walk among the olive trees and the vines, meet the animals (Eros the pony, the donkeys Afrodite and Menios, and the Zakynthos land turtles) and then sit down for a tasting of the family’s olive oils, raisins, honey and other local products, with the story of how each one is made. The family is around to answer every question about the land and their methods.

Entrance and tasting are free for the 2026 season, with no reservation required. The farm shop sells the products you taste, and buying something is the best way to support the family.

What is included

Free entry and a walk through the olive groves and vineyards

Meeting the farm animals

Free tasting of olive oils, raisins, honey and local products

Good to know

Open daily, 10:30 to 18:00. Tastings start at 10:30, 11:30, 12:30 and 17:00

A short drive from Alykes and Zakynthos town

The tavern and the Greek nights are separate and paid

Price

Free. Just drop by during opening hours.

Agia Marina Donkey Rescue is a family-run, non-profit sanctuary for old, abandoned and unwanted donkeys in the south of Crete, a ten-minute drive from Matala beach. It started over 25 years ago when Barbara and Fanis were asked to take in Olive, a small donkey whose elderly owner could no longer care for her. More donkeys followed, and the olive orchard next to their home became a refuge. They receive no state support and rely entirely on donations and donkey adoptions.

Visitors are welcome five mornings a week. You walk among the donkeys, feed them (apples and carrots are welcome), brush them and hear their stories from the family. Peacocks, ducks, geese, hens, cats and dogs share the farm with them. Children love it and are welcome with an adult.

There is no entrance fee. The sanctuary encourages a small donation or a souvenir from its little shop, and every euro goes to feed, vet care and medication for the donkeys.

What is included

Free entry to the sanctuary

Meeting, feeding and brushing the donkeys with the family

A small shop with donkey souvenirs and local produce

Good to know

Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 13:30. Closed Sunday and Monday

On the Gortyna to Matala road, at Petrokefali. Free parking at the gate

No toilets on site and no smoking

Price

Free. Book your visit so the family knows you are coming. Donations are welcome on site.

Want to do more? Adopt or sponsor a donkey through the sanctuary’s website: agia-marina-donkey-rescue.com

Corfu Donkey Rescue is a non-profit refuge for old, abandoned and mistreated donkeys, hidden among olive trees and mountains just outside Doukades, near Paleokastritsa. It was founded by Judy Quinn, who took in her first rescue, Hope, in January 2004. Since then more than 500 donkeys have found shelter here. The refuge is run by a small team and volunteers and survives on donations and donkey adoptions.

The refuge is open to visitors every day of the year. A volunteer shows you around, introduces you to the donkeys and tells you their stories. Many of them have been through a lot, so visits are calm and respectful: you pet them, take photos and spend time with them at their pace. Outside July and August you can also take a donkey out for a short walk.

The visit is free. If you want to help, the refuge welcomes donations, donkey adoptions and volunteers. Please do not bring carrots: many of the donkeys are on special diets. Watermelon is their favourite treat.

What is included

Free entry to the refuge

A walk around with a volunteer and the donkeys’ stories

Time to pet the donkeys and take photos

Good to know

Open every day, 10:00 to 16:00, all year round

Groups should call ahead; individuals and couples can just turn up

Wash your hands before and after, and keep children calm around the animals

Price

Free. Book your visit so the refuge knows you are coming. Donations are welcome on site.

Want to do more? Adopt a donkey or volunteer through the refuge’s website: corfu-donkeys.com

A private version of the farm tour, for 2 to 4 people. Your introduction to the world of mushrooms begins with a twenty minute presentation by the mycologist of the team, who explains in a simple and engaging way the biology, the ecology and the magic of mushroom cultivation.

The experience then moves to the special greenhouses of 360 square metres, where autumn conditions prevail. The space hosts different species at every stage of growth: oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus citrinopileatus), shiitake (Lentinula edodes), lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) and coral tooth (Hericium coralloides).

You walk through the growing rooms, touch the substrates, photograph the crops and get practical, well founded information: nutritional value, how to store and preserve mushrooms and how to use them in the kitchen. The experts are there for a direct and friendly exchange of knowledge, with no academic tone. The visit can be completed with a meal at Mycena, where the dishes are based on the mushrooms grown on site.

What is included

Introductory presentation by the mycologist of the team (about 20 minutes)

Guided visit of the mushroom greenhouses

Practical tips on nutrition, storage and cooking with mushrooms

Good to know

Duration: about 45 minutes.

The greenhouses are 2.5 km before the Park on the same road, with parking for 40 cars. You get there with your own vehicle.

The Park is open to the public every day 10:00 to 15:00 and until 18:00 at weekends.

If you also book a table at the Mycena restaurant, ask the Park about the reduced tour fee.

Price

Price: 19.72 € per person for 2 people (39.43 € in total). From 3 people the price is 15.77 € per person (63.09 € in total for 4 people).

Bookings are on request: choose your date and number of guests and the Dirfys Mushroom Park confirms your visit. Requests are confirmed by Friday at 14:00 at the latest.

About the Dirfys Mushroom Park

The Dirfys Mushroom Park (Mycena Dirfis) in Kathenoi, Evia, is the first themed mushroom park in Greece. It grew out of the olive grove and botanical garden of the mycologists Thanasis Mastrogiannis and Lefteris Lachouvaris (Agricultural University of Athens), who in 2003 set up the first satellite mushroom cultivation system in Greece and in 2006 the first organised shiitake production unit in the country. Today the estate of seven stremmata hosts the mushroom farm, the themed park and the Mycena restaurant, where the menu is built around their own mushrooms and products of the island.
